Composition and Heating Value of Municipal Solid Waste in the Spring Creek Area of New York City

چکیده
An annual mean heating value of 4,112 Btu/lb "as received" has been developed for municipal solid waste in the Spring Creek area of New York City. This is the lowest annual figure that I have seen published for a large metropolitan area in the United States. In view of the unusual value ob tained in this study, the authors should clearly explain why the heating value developed in this study is so much lower than heating values devel oped elsewhere. In order to examine the data more carefully, Tables 6, 8 and 9 were combined, adjusted so that percentages add to 100, and expanded to include "as received," "dry" and "moisture and ash free" (MAF) an.alyses to produce Table A for 24 autumn residential samples. On examination of Table A, three aberrations come into focus: 1. A low ratio of fixed carbon to volatile matter. 2. A low ratio of hydrogen to oxygen. 3. A low heating value MAF. The very low ratio of fixed carbon to volatile matter is an indication that something may be amiss in the laboratory procedures. Based on prior work, one would expect the moisture and ash free proximate analysis to be more like 85

Evaluating of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) Production from Municipal Solid Waste (Case Study: Qazvin Province)
Considering increasing population growth in recent decades, and consequently, the increase in waste production in the world, waste management and efforts to reduce their harm to the environment has become an important issue. One of the appropriate ways to manage municipal waste is to generate energy from waste, especially by RDF production method. On the other hand, in order to reduce the consu...
متن کاملEnergy recovery from New York City municipal solid wastes.
This work was part of a major study that examined the policy and technology implications of alternatives for managing the municipal solid wastes (MSW) of New York City. At this time, of the 4.1 million metric tons of MSW collected by the City annually, 16.6% are recycled, 12.4% are combusted in Waste-to-Energy (WTE) plants, and the remaining 71% are landfilled. Despite the heterogeneity of orga...

Identifying Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) disposal sites and appropriately managing them is a challenging task to many developing countries like Bangladesh. It is a complex issue in an urban area, as increasing population levels, rapid economic growth and rise in community living standard, accelerates the generation rate of MSW. The study area is zone-2 (Mirpur-Pallabi) of Dhaka North City Corpor...
متن کاملSeasonal characterization and quantification of municipal solid waste: Energy content and statistical analysis
Determining the seasonal and annual quantities and compositions of the municipal solid waste and assessing the present management conditions of three urban communities in the northwest of Iran were the core objectives of this study. Our findings revealed that the average daily per capita of municipal waste generation was 0.489–0.841 kg/cap-day. Organic and food waste comprised the largest part ...
